Strategic Approach to Achieving Goals
By: Ariel Santillan
The key to some of the most outstanding success stories in wellness are mostly associated with one’s choice to stop accepting bad habits and most importantly, the ability to maintain a strong focus on individual goals. So how do we help ourselves in maintaining this focus? It’s called Visualization and research shows us that it leads to greater and faster achievements. During the 1920s, the Russian Olympic Team were the first to use Visualization in their training modules, through Sports Psychology. Today, nearly every athletic program uses it. In fact, the Canadian Olympic team brought 8 sports psychologists to Sochi in 2014.
An interesting story I came across was that of Florence Chadwick. In 1950, she became the first woman to swim the English Channel in both directions, breaking the record time. Two years later, when she attempted to swim 26 miles across the Catalina Channel to the California Coastline, she quit with less than half a mile to go from the finish line! When asked about why she quit, the following day at a press conference, she replied: “All I could see was the fog.…I think if I could have seen the shore, I would have made it.” Due to the thick fog that broke out, Chadwick had lost sight of her goal, like many people do today. On her next attempt two months later, the same fog broke out but Chadwick made the swim and broke the mens record by two hours! This time, with the shore line in her mental sight.
Through the visualization of accomplishing something great, we create positive thinking and even promote the release of endorphins which make us feel happier. People that are happier tend to be more motivated and well, motivation seems to increase the probability of achieving any goal. This may help to explain why Chadwick made the swim. This cognitive concept brought forward by great minds like Napoleon Hill seem to suggest that persistent and vivid visualizations create Desire, which is the key to success.
